Let’s take a closer look at one smart way to save for a home: knowing where your money is going.
A lot of people use apps to track spending and set budgets so they can see exactly what’s eating their cash. Some of the most popular tools work with multiple account types — like bank accounts and credit cards — so they automatically import and categorize transactions instead of you entering them manually.
Empower is a totally free tool that lets you link bank accounts, credit cards, and more to build a big-picture view of spending, budgets, and goals — which makes it great for automatic tracking.
PocketGuard also offers automatic spending tracking, but its full budgeting features require a paid plan; the free version is more limited.
Rocket Money has a free tier for basics, including subscription tracking and spending snapshots, with optional premium features to budget more deeply.
Goodbudget is partially free: the free version gives you basic envelope-style budgeting, but it won’t import transactions unless you upgrade, meaning you’ll manually enter spending.
Most apps that automatically track spending across bank and credit card accounts require you to connect the app to those accounts. That’s very convenient — but it does mean granting the app access to your financial information.
For buyers who are more security-conscious, there’s also a manual option like using a spreadsheet. It avoids account linking, but it requires more setup and ongoing data entry, so it’s more work than most people want.
Whatever method you choose, the goal is the same: tracking your spending helps you spot patterns, cut unnecessary costs, and save more efficiently.
And remember — it’s always okay to ask. We’re here to help you get home.
